Award-winning Runcorn fundraiser David Ash back on home ground for charity

We'll be welcoming to APEC Taxis Stadium for three forthcoming home games a champion Runcorn fundraiser, who is very much in the pink - but don't mess with his tutu!

Runner David Ash, known as 'PinkTutuGuy' because of his distinctive outfit, has over the years raised more than £165,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Since 2015, he has been running 5km every day in January and this is only part of his efforts in aid of the charity.

David's remarkable achievements were last month recognised with a British Citizen Award (BCA).

He was one of only 26 honoured at the London ceremony.

David, 59, has a strong family connection to Linnets.

In the 1980s, his dad Keith Ash was assistant secretary of our predecessor club Runcorn AFC with Keith and wife Betty also organising the original Linnets Travel Club.

Keith died of lung cancer, aged 54 - two years after being in the official party for the former club's '86 FA Trophy final appearance at Wembley. It's in Keith's memory that David now runs and fundraises.

David will be attending our games against Tranmere Rovers in Liverpool Senior Cup next Wednesday (February 26th), Stalybridge Celtic (Saturday, April 21st) and Bootle (Easter Monday, April 21st).

He will be bringing his collection buckets to the APEC and he might even mark his visit with a few laps of the pitch!

David was last with us in September 2016 for a North West Counties League derby against 1874 Northwich.

He and his nephew Chris Riley were preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro 12 months later.

The intrepid pair had to abandon their expedition at 14,500ft (with 75% of the climb completed) when their mum and grandma Betty took seriously ill.

Undeterred David and Chris, calling themselves Team One Step, returned to Tanzania 12 months later to finally reach Africa's highest mountain peak at 19,341feet, raising a magnificent £32,141.

David received his BCA Medal of Honour for Service and Charitable Giving at a ceremony in the Palace of Westminster, hosted by TV presenter Matt Allwright.

He was "utterly shocked" on first hearing of the award,

"Fundraisers and awareness sharers like me don't do what we do for awards or accolades," said David.

"For me, the experience of doing it is the award in itself.

He added: "I'm so excited about what the honour says to everyone who's ever supported our cause in the past, and in the future too.

"The timing from my point of view could not be any better.

"I'm now on with my 2025 #PinkTutuGuy running campaign and this culminates on April 27 a mile or so from Parliament, at the finish line of the London Marathon.

"I will certainly be continuing what I do, with even more of a spring in my step. A labour of love is no labour at all."
