Runcorn Linnets Ladies made it seven home wins from 10 in their North West Women's Regional League Division One South campaign.

They defeated bottom-of-the table Litherland REMYCA Women 4-1 at APEC Taxis Stadium thanks to a Mollie Bennett hat-trick.

The visitors, with a solitary point to show for their season's efforts, did remarkably to stay in the game for so long with only 10 players at their disposal.

Linnets Ladies had taken an early lead but Litherland restricted the hosts to a slender 2-1 interval advantage as Erin Cotton pulled one back.

Bennett restored the two-goal cushion, the scoring being completed by a REMYCA own goal.

Games in hand on the teams above them mean that Linnets Ladies harbour hopes of improving on their current fourth place.

With seven games left to play, yesterday's win took them beyond their 2023-24 points tally of 33, which was enough for fifth place, and on to 34 points from 15 matches.

A point behind Mossley Hill, having played four games fewer, Linnets Ladies are looking favourites to finish third.

But victories from their two-catch up games on FC St Helens Women would take them to within three points of runners-up spot.

The clubs meet at Windleshaw Sports Ground in Dentons Green on the final Sunday of the season (April 27th).

Linnets also have to visit rivals Mossley Hill Ladies on Sunday April 6th.

This is the last of three imminent away trips, the sequence starting this Sunday (March 23rd) at Chester FC Women and continuing with the return fixture against Litherland on the 30th.

There are tough tests still to come but

Linnets Ladies managers Tom Dyson and Jack Slater have every reason to be delighted at progress during their first season in co-charge.

They have lowered the age profile of the squad and working alongside the junior section are making inroads into establishing future pathways for young players to move through the ranks to senior level.
