The intrepid Ron Corn is under starter's orders and limbering up for the race of his life!
Runcorn Linnets' ever-popular club mascot will put his sprint speed to the test as a first-time entrant in the world-beating Sue Ryder Mascot Gold Cup, taking place at Wetherby Racecourse on Sunday, April 27th 2025.
He will be raising money towards palliative care in Halton - specifically, the purchase of portable ultrasound equipment.
This will assist the treatment of people living with cancer by specialist staff from Bridgewater Community Health Care NHS Foundation and Runcorn’s Macmillan Delamere Support & Information Centre at Halton Hospital.
Ron's personal fundraising target is £3,500, so he needs all the support going from fans on his big-race debut in Yorkshire.
You can find out more and sponsor Ron here.
The event, over a furlong with six fences, will pitch Ron against esteemed counterparts from all over the country.
The race features mascots of local, regional and national businesses, charities, and sports teams.
Winner in 2024 was Stormy Sam from the RNLI.
This will be the 18th running of the Gold Cup, which in 2015 set a Guinness World Record for the biggest field of mascots in a race.
Organisers say it will be bigger and better than ever this year!
Before the start, there will be an official Mascot Parade as punters study form before placing bets on their favourites.
Who will win the coveted prize for Best Turned Out Mascot?
Ron is out to give last year's recipient Dame Judi Wrench, representing InstallerSHOW, a run for her money, although many of his rival competitors boast much bigger budgets.
Dont worry, Ron. It is what’s inside that counts and you have the biggest heart! 💛💚
Ron is already preparing for the big challenge on a self-styled high-fibre diet with a touch of protein thrown in.
Leaving nothing to chance, he also has a full support team to ensure he is in tip-top condition and at the peak of fitness.
Ron will be accompanied across the Pennines by an adoring entourage of club officials, volunteers and staff from Runcorn Linnets.
This includes fundraising and community manager Tracey Tinsley and fan engagement manager Kelly Jones (both from the Trust Board), APEC Taxis Stadium tea bar manager Kelly Marlow, Charl Ryan from the MDB Clubhouse Bar and Vicki Yarwood, who knows Ron better than anyone.
Ron promises he will put his best feet forward in the race, knowing it’s all in a great cause, while hinting that many more new and great adventures lie ahead of him!
